What is PREN?
PREN, or Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number, is a critical metric used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of stainless steel and other alloys, particularly against pitting corrosion. Pitting corrosion refers to the formation of tiny holes or pits in a material, which can weaken its structure and be difficult to detect.
The PREN is determined by assessing the percentage composition of specific elements in an alloy, allowing for a direct comparison of the pitting resistance of different materials. To compute the PREN value, the quantities of key elements like Chromium, Molybdenum, Tungsten, and Nitrogen in the alloy are analyzed. A higher PREN value indicates better resistance to pitting corrosion.
For a quick reference, PipeSearch offers a free PREN calculator. Simply input the elemental percentages of your material to calculate its PREN.
